On April 30, US time, exactly 100 days after Mr. Trump was in the White House, Ms. Kamala Harris criticized Mr. Trump’s tariff policy for leading to an economic recession.

In a speech on the 100th day since President Donald Trump took office for his second term, former US Vice President Kamala Harris called on Americans to stand together against Mr. Trump.

She also called Mr Trump’s tariff and regulatory policies the source of “the greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history”.

According to Reuters, these are the comments in Ms. Harris’s biggest speech since leaving office, and mark her return to the political stage.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters in her hometown of San Francisco Bay Area, Ms. Harris said Mr. Trump’s economic policies only benefit the rich.

She described Mr Trump’s vision as “narrow and selfish”, “punishing those who dare to speak the truth, favouring those who are blindly loyal, profiting from their power and leaving others to fend for themselves”.

Ms. Harris also publicly opposed Mr. Trump, called on her allies to speak out and honored those who opposed the US president such as Senators Cory Booker, Sanders or activists.

By the end of the first quarter of 2025, the US economy began to show signs of recession in the past three years.

President Trump blamed former President Joe Biden for the lackluster GDP growth, while seeking to emphasize that domestic consumer demand remains strong.

According to a recent Reuters poll, Mr. Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 42%, with only 36% of Americans agreeing with the way he is running the world’s largest economy.

The female politician from the Democratic Party is currently considered a potential candidate for the position of governor of California in the 2026 gubernatorial election.

A mid-April poll showed that if Ms. Harris ran, she would lead the primary election for California governor in June 2026.

Observers believe that she could again become the Democratic Party’s candidate in the next US presidential election.
