Remembering Lauren Hill: A Legacy Beyond Basketball
Today, we pause to honor and celebrate the life of Lauren Hill, who would have turned 30 years old. While her time on earth was far too short, her story continues to inspire millions across the world.
Lauren was not only a talented basketball player at Mount St. Joseph University, wearing the number 22, but also a courageous young woman who turned her battle with cancer into a mission of hope. Despite her diagnosis of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and inoperable brain tumor, Lauren chose to keep fighting — not for herself, but for the countless children and families who would face the same struggle.
Her determination led to the historic game on November 2, 2014, when she stepped onto the court, scored the first basket of the season, and ignited a movement that transcended sports. That game wasn’t just about basketball — it was about resilience, courage, and love.
Through the #Playfor22 campaign, Lauren raised awareness and millions of dollars for pediatric cancer research, leaving behind a legacy that continues to impact lives to this day.
Lauren Hill may no longer be with us, but her story reminds us that true greatness is not measured by victories on the scoreboard, but by the strength of the human spirit.
On what would have been her 30th birthday, we say:
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Lauren. Your light still shines, your fight still inspires, and your legacy lives on in every heart you touched.
