83-year-old veteran NCAA coach Bob Knight has left the world today, and many are mourning his death. As tales of his legend are slowly getting attention, we heard of one anecdote where Michael Jordan broke down before the late head coach in 1984. Knight was known for his unique style of coaching. Strictly avoiding any bias, the Hoosiers coach would berate anyone who did not follow his directions.

NCAA champion and former Olympic star Sam Perkin shared a little-known incident from the 1984 Olympics. The American team that faced Germany in the quarter-finals had obtained a comfortable 11-point win. However, Jordan had six turnovers in the game, which Knight was not happy about.

Though the 6-time champion was a 21-year-old youngster back then, Knight decided to teach him a lesson. According to Perkins, “He[Knight] told Michael that’s the worst he ever played.” Moreover, Knight demanded that Jordan apologize to every single one of his teammates individually.

Perkins shared that the Bulls legend did not apologize, but instead, he began to cry. Perhaps it was this incident that made him one of the most prolific and driven players in basketball.

It’s interesting to note that Knight coached Jordan’s famous rival Isiah Thomas as well. Maybe this is why Jordan and Thomas ferociously competed with each other in the NBA, though direct conflict would not have been tolerated while they were under coach Bob Knight.

Though he was just 21 years old, Jordan was critical to the USA’s victory. Despite six turnovers in the quarter-finals, the 5-time MVP redeemed himself with just one turnover in both the semi-finals and finals. Averaging 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists, Jordan secured the gold medal for Team USA by defeating Spain in the final battle. It may be safe to say that though Knight’s coaching style was hard-handed, it was effective.

Sadly at 83 years, the NCAA legend’s life has come to an end.
