Fans Eagerly Awaiting Henry Cavill’s Highlander Reboot Will Have to Wait Some More – New Update Spells Bad News for Superman Star

Fans of the classic 1986 film Highlander are eagerly awaiting the upcoming reboot, starring Henry Cavill himself. To be helmed by Chad Stahelski, this reboot is one of the most anticipated releases for the fans. Amidst this, the chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group brings news that might be a bad one for some.

Director Chad Stahelski earlier said that the movie will be akin to “John Wick with swords.” Though the reboot has been in the works for years, it was finally confirmed last month and fans have been excited enough to see Henry Cavill in the reboot.

The Highlander Reboot is Coming, But Not So Soon

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake reveals on their investor call that the film starring Henry Cavill is aiming for a 2026 release date. There’s no official information on when the film’s production will start. Maybe it could start after Stahelski is done with his adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima.

Lionsgate’s CEO Jon Feltheimer called Highlander one of the studio’s “fiscal ’26 tentpoles.” But pushing the release for 2026 may result in decreased excitement from fans in the fast-paced small-screen projects nowadays.

Director Stahelski already stated that the filming could start next year. So, taking two years to make it ready for release may kill the hype among the fans.

With the dual strike now coming to an end, the filming could start earlier than we think. And we say – The sooner the better!

Director Chad Stahelski Talks About the Reboot

Chad Stahelski revealed that with the reboot, his goal is to honor all corners of the beloved mythology. He just does not want to recreate what happened in the original movie.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said:

I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is, when you have the tagline, ‘There can be only one,’ you can’t just kill everybody the first time.”

The John Wick director continued:

I’ll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property. We have ideas for days about how to make the coolest characters and to make that an epic TV show. I just think that’s a rich, rich mythology.”

The original 1986 Highlander movie starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown as immortal beings.
