Kim Soo Hyun’s company denies allegations of stock manipulation

The suspicious spike in stock prices at Siwon School, a popular online education company listed on KOSDAQ, has attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies.
Police have launched an investigation into alleged stock manipulation involving the company – and worryingly, actor Kim Soo Hyun’s management company, Gold Medalist, has also been implicated in the investigation.
According to stock data, Siwon’s stock price hovered around 1,000 won before skyrocketing in July three years ago. In just nine months, the stock skyrocketed to over 10,000 won. However, the rally did not last long. A sudden wave of stock sell-offs caused a sharp decline, bringing the price back to its previous level within two months.
The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Financial Services Commission filed a police report, raising suspicions of market manipulation. The Korea Exchange (KRX) also flagged the stock for unusual trading behavior.
Authorities have since identified accounts and their owners believed to be involved in the alleged manipulation. Investigators are now tracing the money to determine whether illicit profits were generated through the suspected scheme.
More than 50% of Siwon’s shares are held by a private investment partnership, which is itself funded by two other entities – one of which is an entertainment company.
The entertainment company is none other than Gold Medalist, the talent agency that represents top actor Kim Soo Hyun. When contacted by KBS for an interview, Gold Medalist denied any wrongdoing, stating, “We have nothing to do with the stock trading in question.”
As the investigation continues, both financial regulators are keeping a close eye on developments – especially given the high-profile names involved and the potential legal consequences involved.
