Donald Trump congratulates Robert Prevost on being elected as the new pope.
US President Donald Trump celebrated the election of Leo XIV as the new leader of the Catholic Church, highlighting the historic fact that he is the first pope born on US soil.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has just been named pope. It’s a great honor to know that he is the first American pope. What a thrill and what a great honor for our country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV,” he said on his Truth Social network.
WHO IS ROBERT PREVOST?
Leo XIV, born in Chicago 69 years ago, becomes the 267th pontiff in the history of the Church. He succeeds Francis, who died on April 21 at the age of 88.
In addition to his American citizenship, the new pope has also held Peruvian nationality since 2015, the year he obtained it after having served much of his ministry in Peru, particularly as bishop of Chiclayo.
His election takes place during the Jubilee or Holy Year called by Pope Francis, which will conclude on January 6, 2026. Leo XIV will be responsible for closing this important spiritual period for the Catholic faithful
