The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has postponed Neymar’s surgery for his injury sustained during the October 18 match where the Brazilian team lost to Uruguay with a 0-2 score in the 2026 World Cup qualifying round in South America. The decision was made as Brazil has two crucial matches against Colombia and Argentina coming up in November.

Despite hopes that Neymar would recover through physical therapy, it seems unlikely and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has decided to allow their top player to undergo surgery. This means that he will have to take a long-term break from competition, with a possible recovery time of six to eight months. CBF has confirmed that Neymar will miss the remaining matches in 2023 and may even be absent from the 2024 Copa America tournament if he fails to regain his physical strength and form in time. According to Marca newspaper, Neymar’s recent tests have revealed a complete tear in his anterior cruciate ligament, which is one of the many injuries he has encountered since 2020. In total, he has had to take a break from competitive play for over 424 days due to various injuries. With this new injury, the 31-year-old star continues to face a prolonged absence from competition as he prepares for surgery.

The career of Neymar can be greatly impacted by frequent injuries, according to AFP. Despite his record-breaking transfer fee of 90 million euros from PSG to Al Hilal Club in Saudi Arabia in August 2023, the Brazilian footballer has only played five matches so far, scoring one goal and providing three assists before succumbing to a long-term injury. His annual income, including salary and commercial contracts, is estimated to be almost 200 million euros. Al Hilal Club is currently requesting 6.5 million euros in compensation from FIFA, citing Neymar’s injury while on duty with the team during the World Cup qualifiers.
