Portuguese Football Federation President Confirms Diogo Jota’s Sudden Departure
According to local media, Diogo Jota was reportedly traveling with his younger brother Andre Silva (26) when the car lost control, veered off the road, crashed hard and burst into flames. Both died.
The tragedy occurred on the A-52, through the province of Zamora, a vital road linking northern Portugal with the Spanish mainland. Rescue services from the Castilla y Leon region have confirmed the accident.

Just a day before his death, Jota was still emotional in an interview sharing about his dream marriage with Rute and calling himself the luckiest man in the world.
Jota’s sudden passing was officially confirmed by Pedro Proenca, President of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). In an emotional statement, he wrote:
“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire football community are in a state of extreme mourning following the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva this morning in Spain.
More than just a great player with nearly 50 caps for the National Team, Diogo is an extraordinary person, a personality loved by teammates and opponents, a shining example of a positive lifestyle and a spirit of dedication to the community.
On behalf of myself and the entire FPF, I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the two players, as well as to Liverpool and FC Penafiel, the clubs they were once associated with.”
The Portuguese Football Federation has also sent a request to UEFA to hold a minute’s silence before the match between Portugal and Spain in the Women’s Euro finals next Thursday.
Mr. Proenca concluded with an emotional farewell: “We have lost two champions. The departure of Diogo and Andre is an irreparable loss for Portuguese football. We will strive every day to be worthy of the legacy they left behind.”
