Details of the scene of Diogo Jota’s haunting accident, Liverpool fans ‘speechless’
On the afternoon of July 3, the football world was shocked by the news that Liverpool and Portugal striker Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, had died in a tragic car accident near Zamora, Spain.
The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed the incident to the Associated Press, which was also confirmed by Liverpool FC, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The tragic accident occurred just weeks after Diogo Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso. They have three children together.
Scene of the terrible accident
According to initial reports from the Zamora Provincial Council, the car carrying the brothers suddenly lost control, went off the road and burst into flames. The Civil Guard said they were investigating the cause of the accident and confirmed that no other vehicles were involved.
Diogo Jota’s (Liverpool) Lamborghini caught fire completely after the accident.
The football world is in mourning
The sudden passing of Diogo Jota has left the club, teammates and fans around the world in shock and grief.
In an official statement, Liverpool FC said: “Liverpool Football Club is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Diogo and André’s family, friends and teammates is respected as they come to terms with their unimaginable loss. We will continue to offer them our full support.”
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) also issued a statement: “The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are deeply saddened by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva in Spain this morning.”
“Diogo Jota was not only a great player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a role model in his community… We have lost two champions. Their passing is an irreplaceable loss for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”
Diogo Jota and his wife Rute Cardoso had only been married two weeks before the tragedy.
The FPF has asked UEFA to observe a minute’s silence before the women’s national team’s match against Spain at the Women’s European Championship on Thursday.
Diogo Jota is one of the brightest talents in Portuguese football. He started his career at Paços de Ferreira before having spells with Atlético Madrid and FC Porto. He joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and quickly became an important part of the team. In his five years with the club, he made 182 appearances, helping Liverpool win the Premier League title last May, in addition to the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.
At international level, Jota has made 49 appearances for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He and his teammates won the UEFA Nations League twice in 2019 and again last month.
His younger brother, André Silva, 25, is also a professional footballer, playing for Penafiel in the Portuguese lower division.
