Today, shocking news has cast a shadow over the festive atmosphere in Thailand. About 30 minutes ago, a terrible tragedy occurred at one of the most crowded gatherings of the water festival (Songkran) – the country’s biggest traditional event of the year. According to initial reports, more than 500 people were killed and injured, shaking the whole country and the international community.

The incident happened suddenly and chaotically. Witnesses said that the overcrowding, combined with harsh weather conditions and poor organization, led to a stampede. Some unconfirmed sources said that there was an explosion or electrical shock when the speaker system leaked while water was being thrown. While the list of casualties continues to be updated, one piece of information that has made many people breathe a sigh of relief is that famous actress Baifern Pimchanok – who is believed to have been present at the accident site – was lucky to escape. According to her family, Baifern had only left the scene about 15 minutes before the accident occurred.

Thai people are still in shock

At hospitals and relief centers, hundreds of people are still pouring in to search for missing relatives.
