Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber both avoided an awkward run-in at the Vanity Fair Oscars party after it was revealed Selena ‘didn’t want to be near’ her ex Justin’s wife.
Selena Gomez reportedly ‘avoided’ Justin Bieber’s spouse, Hailey Bieber, at the star-studded Vanity Fair Oscar party.
Interestingly, both ladies turned up in strikingly similar strapless black gowns, their hair cascading down their shoulders as they posed for the paparazzi. But Selena was clear that she wanted to avoid any drama on the night and was purely there to celebrate her film.
Selena dazzled at the Beverly Hills afterparty in her elegant black strapless gown, while her fiancé, music producer Benny Blanco, accompanied her at the Oscar ceremony. Meanwhile, Hailey made a solo appearance at Vanity Fair’s Oscars party, turning heads in a ruched black dress from Saint Laurent, complete with a bow accent at the waist.
The 28 year old skincare entrepreneur and mother-of-one confidently worked the red carpet, looking statuesque in the classic Yves Saint Laurent ensemble. Her brunette tresses were neatly parted down the middle, cascading in uniform waves over one shoulder. Justin’s no-show comes just a day after his 31st birthday celebrations and amid growing fan worries about his wellbeing.
A source told DailyMail.com: “There was no way Selena wanted an awkward photo and for everyone to write about it the next day.” The insider added that Selena wanted the spotlight on her role as a presenter for Emilia Perez’s film, which she is immensely proud of.
However, the “Good For You” singer wouldn’t have minded exchanging pleasantries with the Vogue supermodel. “If they ran into each other, she would say hello of course, because Selena is a friendly person.
She just wanted to avoid being photographed with her or near her because then 100 stories are born,” the source explained. They further revealed that Selena had previously taken a picture with Hailey, but it didn’t feel right.
Recent snaps of the star looking unusually fatigued and unkempt have fuelled online rumours of potential drug use. However, a spokesperson for the “Yummy” singer dismissed these claims to TMZ in February, stating categorically that “The recurring narrative that Justin is using hard drugs is absolutely not true.” They further reassured fans that the new dad is “in one of the best places in his life.”
There’s long been rumours of tension between Selena and Hailey, but the former has previously encouraged fans to show “kindness” to her ex’s wife. Selena took to social media in 2023 to inform her followers that Hailey had been in touch with her due to “receiving death threats” amidst speculation of a feud.
Sharing a message on her Instagram Story, Selena said at the time: “Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity. This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying.” Selena then implored her fanbase to spread kindness, posting: “I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.”
Alleged drama surrounding Selena and Hailey had caused quite a stir on social media at the time, with the latter accused of mocking her husband’s ex-partner. Justin was also criticised, with fans calling him “petty” and “childish” on social media.
In 2022, Hailey and Selena reunited to put feud rumours to bed once and for all. Posing for a photo at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ second annual gala in LA, a hug between the pair marked a huge milestone after years of fan speculation there was tension over Justin Bieber.
The duo looked happy and comfortable as they posed for a series of pictures together inside the glitzy bash – and it was reported they were talking for “quite some time”.
“Hailey said that they talked for quite some time and although they did not get into anything too deep, they were able to be real with each other about where they are now. Selena knows that this was a long time coming and she has nothing but love for Hailey and Justin, she told her this. There is nothing left to talk about here and they are both hoping that this finally puts any misconceptions about them to rest,” an insider told Hollywood Life.
That same year, Hailey publicly addressing feud rumours for the first time in a podcast. Hailey insisted there was mutual “respect” between there as she broke her silence. “When [Justin] and I started hooking up, he was never in a relationship, at any point,” she clarified.
“It’s not my character to mess with someone’s relationship, I would just never do that, I was raised better than that. I’m not interested in doing that and I never was. I understand how it looks from the outside.”

She added: “[Selena] doesn’t owe me anything, neither of us owe each other anything except respect. I respect her a lot. I respect her, there’s no drama personally.”
