Kristin Cabot, the HR director at the technology company Astronomer whose intimate moment with her boss is causing a “storm on the internet”, is said to be married to Andrew Cabot, owner of the Privateer Rum brand and a sixth-generation descendant of the Cabot family – one of the oldest and richest families in the United States.
According to social media posts, Andrew Cabot now runs Privateer Rum, a storied New England brand. In a 1972 New York Times article , the Cabot family’s fortune was estimated at $200 million – equivalent to $15.4 billion in today’s dollars.
It is unclear when Kristin and Andrew married, but this is known to be the second marriage for both of them. Kristin previously finalized her divorce in 2022.
Kristin Cabot’s since-deleted LinkedIn account listed her as an “advisory board member” at Privateer Rum as of September 2020. Real estate records also show the couple purchased a $2.2 million mansion in coastal New Hampshire earlier this year.
The Cabots are known to be part of the “Boston Brahmin” class – a wealthy, powerful, and long-standing elite that has dominated New England for centuries. This is an Anglo-Saxon elite that has been wealthy for generations – so much so that the Irish-Catholic Kennedys were considered “outsiders” in the class.
A famous satirical poem about Boston reads: “And this is old Boston/ Home of beans and cod/ Where the Lowells talk only to the Cabots/ And the Cabots talk only to God.”
The Cabots’ wealth came from the production of “carbon black,” a key ingredient in the tire industry, and 19th-century maritime trade, including slavery and opium, according to historical records.
Samuel Cabot is credited with kick-starting the family’s fortunes with his marriage to Eliza Perkins, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Over the decades, Cabots continued to expand their influence into many industries, including rum.
In addition, the Cabot family has a tradition of contributing to leading educational institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, Norwich University and Perkins School for the Blind.
Francis Cabot, a member of the New York family, once frankly said: “My family has had two great interests throughout its history: One is marrying rich women, the other is… singing in choirs.”
It can be said that the love scandal between Kristin Cabot and Astronomer CEO Andy Byron, caught red-handed on the big screen at a Coldplay concert, is causing a stir not only in the technology world but also attracting curiosity towards one of the most prestigious families in America.
It was surprising that Kristin, the daughter-in-law of a Harvard-affiliated family who “only talks to God,” would be at the center of a workplace ethics scandal. While Andy Byron has resigned as CEO amid an internal investigation, Kristin Cabot’s future, both professionally and personally, remains a big question mark.
